Six Walls

Six surfaces to bring your sound to life.

The name

A room, at its most basic, consists of six surfaces: a ceiling, a floor, and four vertical walls. Floors and ceilings are basically horizontal walls. So… Six Walls.

Walls are something that sounds bounce off of. They are how we hear reflections. They are how sound comes to life. If you’re in a well (some might say ‘overly’) treated room, you say that the room is ‘dead.’ Meaning, there is little to no reflection of sound from the walls or surfaces. A ‘live’ room, on the other hand, is full of reflection, echo, and reverb.

Six Walls – Six surfaces to bring your sound to life.

Who’s behind it

From an early age music caught my attention. I would sit for hours listening to my KISS records on the family’s stereo, headphones pressed tight to my ears, trying to pick up every subtle sound.

That drove me to a degree in Music and Video Business: The Art Institute’s fancy way of saying “Audio Engineer.” I had dreams of being the next Bob Ezrin, the man behind the band(s). Writing, mixing, producing. That’s what I wanted. But we all know how likely major success is in the music industry. For (steady) money, I fell back to my second love. Computers.

A thirty-year career as a developer and a tester has led me to this moment: the time when I can finally join my two passions.

How the plugins get made

The emulations start with real hardware on my bench. The ThirtySix is a measured Alesis 3630, and The NanoFlux is a measured original NanoVerb (both unofficial; Alesis had nothing to do with either). The goal is the box as it actually behaves, quirks included, rather than the box as the brochure described it. Where a plugin still falls short of the hardware, its manual says so.

The others started as fixes for problems in real sessions: The Overhead(s) for drum overheads with too much shell in them, and The Room for a reverb that sounds like an actual room you could stand in.

Why it’s free

Everything here is free. There’s no account to make and no telemetry. If something earns a spot in your sessions and you’d like to say thanks, The Miraculous Love Kids will put it to better use than I would.
