The big names in plugin modeling keep going back to the same handful of legends — the six-figure racks that lived behind glass in rooms most of us only ever saw in magazines. That gear deserves the attention. But it's not where most of us actually started.
We started with the cheap stuff. The compressor everyone owned because it was affordable and it did the job, and it happened to sound like nothing else — not because it was clean, but because it wasn't. The half-rack boxes that showed up in every home studio because they were the ones you could actually afford. That's where a lot of our sound came from, and there's no good reason it should just fade into a used-gear listing and a fond memory.
We've already brought one of those pieces back. The ThirtySix takes that inexpensive early-'90s dual-channel compressor everyone seemed to own and gets its exact pump and character right — not a polished, modern idea of it, the actual thing, warts and all. Something else is already on the bench behind it, and it's going to sound exactly as unhinged as you remember.
Six Walls isn't chasing the gear that never left the pro-studio catalog. We're paying homage to the stuff that got us all started — cheap, a little unpredictable, and completely unmistakable once you'd heard it. It's built in spare time, given away for free, and made by people who still think about that gear fondly instead of looking down on it.
If that's the sound you cut your teeth on, stick around. Good things, good times, and good memories are on the way.
