The BBE 422A (unofficial) has an In/Out switch, and that switch is how you find out what the box is actually doing. Out is bypass. In is the effect. You press it, listen, press it again, and decide whether what you just did to the knobs was an improvement. The trick is that you do it with one hand on the switch and the other hand on the knobs, so every change gets compared right away, while you still remember what it was being compared to.
A mouse gives you one hand. That hand has to find Function, click it, go back to Lo-Contour, nudge it, go back to Function, and click again. By the third round trip you've forgotten what the dry signal sounded like, which is more or less the whole reason the switch exists.
So The FortyTwo 1.0.1 has a hold-to-flip key. Hold the backtick key (`) with the pointer over the plugin window, and Function flips to the opposite setting. Let go, and it snaps back. One hand stays on the key, the other keeps the mouse on the knobs, and you can compare as often as you like without ever leaving the dial you're on.
A few details:
- It crossfades over about 50 ms, the same as the real switch, so flipping while audio plays doesn't click.
- If your DAW already claims the backtick, right-click Function to pick a different key. The same menu turns the feature off.
- The key is remembered per user, not per project.
- I've tried it in Pro Tools and Studio One, and it works in both.
It's a free update like everything else here. If you have the Six Walls Installer, it'll tell you. If not, Get It! on the product page will set you up, and the manual has the rest.
